Building Codes

Building Codes Expert Witness

IEI’s building codes consultants are knowledgeable in applying codes to building systems and components

Ivey Engineering’s building codes expert witnesses have considerable experience with most building codes and industry standards. Essential to protecting an occupant’s health and safety, building codes are regulations that govern the construction of buildings and other types of facilities.  Also, codes regulate the manufacture of products used in construction.

National model codes include those published by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), International Code Council (ICC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Industry standards are published by NFPA; NSF; ASTM; Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); Underwriter Laboratories (UL); American Society of Heating Refrigerating, Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and other organizations to complement the codes.

Our building codes consultants have decades of experience designing building systems; many of our experts have extensive background in the construction industry and routinely apply codes and standards when resolving disputes that involve building systems and products.

Code Development & Adoption

Several members of our technical staff participate in the code development process by serving on committees responsible for various codes. The codes and industry standards are developed by consensus. The proposed language of the code is shared with the public for comment and debate. Typically, the committee responsible for the code considers all public comments; it ultimately approves or disapproves code changes by majority vote.

Model codes are developed by organizations such as ICC, IAPMO and NFPA for adoption by local building authorities, also known as Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs). Model codes are also used internationally and usually adopted by local ordinance. These ordinances often include exceptions and additions to adapt the provisions to local requirements.
