Fire & Explosion Investigation Expert Witness

Our fire cause and origin expert witnesses have experience with arson, electrical malfunctions and construction defects

As a fire and explosion investigation expert witness, Ivey Engineering analyzes and investigates fires and explosions caused by electrical malfunctions, gas leaks, arson, commercial and residential kitchen incidents, improper use or maintenance of heating equipment and construction defects.

The guide for fire and explosion investigations is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 921. This guide requires the use of the scientific method to undertake fire investigations. IEI’s fire cause and origin expert witnesses are trained in the use of scientific methods, which require a systematic process of:

  • Defining the problem
  • Collection of data
  • Analyzing the data
  • Developing hypotheses
  • Testing hypotheses
  • Drawing conclusions

We Stay Up To Date

The outdated method of “negative corpus”, the method of determining the fire cause by the method of elimination, is no longer valid. It has been scrutinized by the industry and determined not to result in proper conclusions. This method has been replaced by the scientific method of fire investigation as prescribed by NFPA 921.

Our Process

Our fire cause and origin expert witnesses research the sequences of fire activities to establish the most likely fire scenarios. Fuel analysis, geometry and orientation are valuable information in developing a likely fire sequence analysis. IEI fire investigators identify fire scenarios with potential fire origin and causes.

State-of-the-Art Methods

IEI uses state-of-the-art methods to investigate fires and explosions. Electrical system failures, gas leaks, construction defects and improper maintenance and use of heating equipment are often causes of fire-related incidents.  Moreover, fires and explosions often result in personal injury, building damage or both; they occur in commercial and residential facilities. IEI works with fire service, law enforcement and insurance professionals to conduct fire investigations.
