Several years before joining Ivey Engineering, Alex Lee held a unique role as a surfing instructor—an experience that left a lasting impact. “We were encouraged to show the kids what’s possible when they conquer their fears and press forward in the face of self-doubt,” he recalls. That experience—helping others push past uncertainty—shaped his mindset of steady growth, adaptability, and persistence, which now fuels his work as a consultant at IEI.

With a degree in mechanical engineering and a background in manufacturing, Alex combines academic knowledge with practical experience. His responsibilities at IEI include assisting with the design of HVAC and plumbing systems, preparing expert reports and presentations, performing site inspections, and conducting technical research and testing.

“I learn something unexpected with every case,” he says. “Whether it’s navigating design specs or code requirements, I’m constantly sharpening my skills.”

Alex’s journey with IEI began as an intern in 2024. “School taught me theory, but IEI gave me practical tools,” he says. During that time, he became confident in researching codes and standards—skills that now play a vital role in his work.

He also brings a strong foundation in design projects, quality control methods, and technical writing—skills that support his ability to analyze building systems and communicate findings clearly. His academic background continues to complement the practical demands of his work at IEI.

Alex is currently working towards his Professional Engineer (PE) license and credits his time at IEI for building the skills and experience he’ll need. “I’m on track to become a reliable consultant by the time I complete my Engineer-In-Training term,” he says.

Alex views success as setting clear, meaningful goals and taking deliberate steps to achieve them. For him, it’s about aligning effort with purpose—because, as he puts it, “You have to know where the endzone is before you can score.”

Outside the office, Alex enjoys outdoor adventures like hiking and surfing, as well as music, strategy games, and the occasional DIY project.
